The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office says emergency personnel responded to a motor vehicle crash Wednesday morning at approximately 6:52AM involving a school bus and a student that was struck in the 5900 block of Courthouse Road.
Major Troy Skebo says deputies learned that the school bus was stopped to pick up children while clearly displaying both the driver side stop arm and front stop arm with appropriate flashing lights warning motorists. Several motorists yielded to this and were stopped in the road while two students were crossing the street to get on the bus. A 2017 Acura Sedan approached the stopped traffic and crossed the double yellow line driving on the wrong side of the road. The driver of the Acura lost control and struck a 14-year-old student and then the front of the 2023 Blue Bird school bus.
Major Skebo says the student was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. At the time of the crash, the bus had approximately 10 students and the driver who were uninjured. The twenty-year-old driver of the Acura was charged with reckless driving. School officials responded to the scene to safely facilitate the transportation of the remaining students to their school.
Sheriff Roger Harris wants to remind motorists to pay attention and use extreme caution when school buses stop to load and unload students.
