Route 1 over South River Bridge Rehabilitation

Construction started in Feb. 2023 on a $4 million project to rehabilitate the Route 1 bridge over the South River, which is located in the Ladysmith area. The condition of the 97-year-old bridge will be improved through substructure and superstructure repairs, and installation of a new, smoother travel surface. Route 1 is reduced to two lanes to accelerate construction. Project completion in July 2024.

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) Widening

Construction is underway to widen Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) to four lanes between I-95 and just west of Route 1. A new raised median will separate eastbound and westbound lanes to allow for improved movement through the corridor. Additional left and right turn lanes will be built on Ladysmith Road at the Route 1 intersection. A shared use path, sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be installed. Project completion in May 2024.

King George County

Route 206 and Route 218 Turn Lane

This project is building a dedicated right turn lane from westbound Route 206 (Dahlgren Road) to westbound Route 218 (Caledon Road). The existing travel lane will be marked as a through lane to go straight or turn left onto Route 632 (St. Paul’s Road). The project will be complete in Oct. 2023.

Route 301 and the Nice-Middleton Bridge Replacement Project

The new Nice/Middleton Bridge is now open to traffic over the Potomac River. Road work continues on Route 301 near the approaches. Read MDTA’s release here.

Route 628 (Dorrell Road/Spring Cottage Road) Bridge Closure

Dorrell Road/Spring Cottage Road is closed at the bridge over the Mattaponi River, located at the King and Queen and King William county line. The road will remain closed until spring 2025 while a bridge superstructure replacement project is designed and constructed. During a routine inspection, crews identified significant deterioration in key bridge elements and the bridge was closed in March 2023 for motorist safety. Motorists should follow signs posted along the detour route.

King William County

Route 629 (Jacks Creek Road)

A portion of Jacks Creek Road is closed through Jan. 2024 for the installation of a concrete box culvert. The project is replacing the existing culvert, which consists of three corrugated metal drainage pipes built in 1943. A detour is in place.

Mathews County

Route 223 (Old Ferry Road) over Milford Haven at Gwynn’s Island

Temporary traffic signals are installed on Route 223 at each approach to the bridge over Milford Haven. One-way, alternating traffic will remain in place, controlled by the temporary signals, through fall 2023 due to a bridge maintenance project. Bridge openings for marine traffic have resumed at six scheduled times a day. Between Friday, Aug. 25, and Friday, Sept. 1, intermittent full traffic stops are possible for Old Ferry Road traffic crossing the bridge between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily for test bridge openings.

Richmond County

Route 637 (County Bridge Road)

I-95 Southbound Exit 126 Off-Ramp and Route 1 Southbound

A second right turn lane is under construction from the I-95 southbound off-ramp at exit 126 onto Route 1 southbound. Route 1 southbound is being widened from the off-ramp to Southpoint Parkway with an additional turn lane. A second right turn lane is being added from Route 1 southbound to Southpoint Parkway. Traffic islands will be installed along Southpoint Parkway as a safety improvement to allow left turns into driveways but restrict through and left-turning traffic exiting from side streets. Additional right turn lane added to Southpoint Parkway to Route 1 southbound. Project completion in Aug. 2025.

Route 1 and Market Street

Construction is underway to build triple left turns from westbound Market Street to Route 1 southbound, with a fourth lane on Market Street becoming a shared through/right turn lane. A shared through/right turn lane on Route 1 southbound at the intersection will tie into the I-95 northbound on-ramp at exit 126, south of the intersection. New sidewalks will be added along westbound Market Street, on Route 1 southbound, and along a short area on Route 1 northbound. Crosswalks will span Market Street and Route 1, controlled by pedestrian crossing signal equipment. Project completion in Dec. 2023.

Route 3 and Orange Plank Road

Route 208 (Courthouse Road) and Hood Drive

Hood Drive is reduced to a single lane between Route 1 and Route 208 (Courthouse Road), carrying only northbound traffic. Southbound traffic should follow the posted detour along Courthouse Road and Route 1 southbound. New right and left turn lanes are under construction at an entrance to a future U.S. Veterans Health Administration outpatient clinic. Additional turn lanes will be built on northbound Hood Drive approaching Courthouse Road. A raised median on Hood Drive will separate northbound and southbound traffic between Courthouse Road and McGowan Drive. Additional sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be installed at the intersection. Project completion in June 2024.

Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) Widening

Mudd Tavern Road is being widened to four lanes between I-95 and Route 1. A new secondary access route, Route 2092, will be built parallel to Mudd Tavern Road, and will connect with South Roxbury Mill Road and Dan Bell Lane. Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road/Morris Road) is reduced to a single lane approaching the traffic signal at the Route 1 intersection through spring 2024 to allow space for widening activities. Project completion in May 2025.

Westmoreland County

Route 621 (North Tidwells Road) Bridge Replacement

North Tidwells Road is closed for a bridge replacement project over an unnamed tributary of the Lower Machodoc Creek. The road will be closed to through traffic until Jan. 2024.
