The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office says the father of a student who brought a loaded firearm into Chancellor Middle School in May has been charged. Major Troy Skebo says 37-year old Josette Rodriguez has been charged with recklessly leaving a loaded, unsecured firearm so as to endanger the life or limb of a child under the age of 14.
Skebo says Rodriquez has a June 20th General District court date. On May 19th, a student reported to a teacher seeing another student with the gun in a backpack. The Sheriff’s Office said at no time was the gun showed in a way to threaten students, faculty, or staff, or threaten the safety of the school. The teacher immediately notified administration and a joint investigation resulted in finding a loaded .45 caliber gun in the student’s backpack.
Sheriff Roger Harris says properly storing and or securing firearms is the best way to prevent curious kids from getting hurt with firearms, youth and adults in crisis from using a family firearm for suicide, and firearms from being stolen and misused by others.
