Route 1 over South River Bridge Rehabilitation

Construction started in Feb. 2023 on a $4 million project to rehabilitate the Route 1 bridge over the South River, which is located in the Ladysmith area. The condition of the 97-year-old bridge will be improved through substructure and superstructure repairs, and installation of a new, smoother travel surface. Route 1 will be reduced to two lanes beginning the week of March 26-31, 2023, to accelerate construction. All lanes will reopen in July 2024, when construction is anticipated to be complete.

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) Widening

Construction is underway to widen Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) to four lanes between I-95 and just west of Route 1. A new raised median will separate eastbound and westbound lanes to allow for improved movement through the corridor. Additional left and right turn lanes will be built on Ladysmith Road at the Route 1 intersection. A shared use path, sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be installed. The project is expected to be complete in May 2024.

Route 652 (Cool Water Drive) over Polecat Creek

Cool Water Drive closed to through traffic in March 2022 at the bridge over Polecat Creek due to significant deterioration in key bridge elements.
