The “you missed jury duty and you’ll need to pay” scam in Stafford

by | Mar 15, 2023 | Police and Fire

From the Stafford Sheriff’s Office:

On Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office had a report of a scam. The victim advised she received a call from Captain Carey with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office. This “Captain” advised the victim she had missed jury duty and needed to pay $1,000 through Zelle to avoid a bench warrant being issued against her.
When the victim arrived at the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office to discuss the issue, she was able to meet the real Captain S.S. Carey. Captain Carey was able to inform her that he never contacted her and that it was a scam.
The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office will never call to demand money. These scams will use real deputies’ names to seem more legit. If you are unsure if you are being scammed or not, hang up the phone and contact the Sheriff’s Office at 540-658-4400.
