The Caroline County Sheriff’s Office has received reports from residents in reference to receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be with the Caroline Sheriff’s Office, and asking for people to donate money to the sheriff’s office.
The Caroline County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER solicit money or any type of donation by telephone, and does not contract with any external services that does fundraising by phone. Several citizens reported being contacted by the telephone number (804) 593-0879.
Since we began investigating this, that phone number is no longer in-service. Investigators believe the scammer who is perpetrating these fraudulent calls is using a voice-over-internet service. With many VOI providers, the consumer can change the phone number assigned to them at any time, so it is possible that these fraudulent calls may continue, and show up on your caller ID as another number. We are asking that you share this post, in an effort to reach as many Caroline County citizens as possible, so that nobody else falls victim to this scam.
