Exit 104 (Carmel Church)
Saturday – Monday, 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. Alternating, single lane closures on I-95 northbound and southbound to allow crews to conduct a routine bridge safety inspection. The bridge is located at mile marker 103 and 104 at the bridge over CSX railroad tracks.
Winter Storm Debris Cleanup
Multiple Routes
Motorists should be alert for mobile work zones in Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties next week for debris removal. Sixteen contractor crews continue to collect debris seven days a week from the state right-of-way following the Jan. 3, 2022, winter storm.
Debris removal is anticipated to be underway through late spring 2022, with more than an estimated 400,000 cubic yards of debris to remove. This amount of debris is anticipated to have filled more than 30,000 dump truck loads when complete. Route 1 Southbound

Caroline County
Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) Widening
Construction is underway to widen Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) to four travel lanes between I-95 and just west of Route 1. A new raised median will separate eastbound and westbound travel lanes to allow for improved movement through the corridor. Additional left and right turn lanes will be built on Ladysmith Road at the Route 1 intersection A shared use path, sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be installed. The project is expected to be complete in May 2024.
Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) and Route 738 (Partlow Road/Anderson Mill Road)
Construction is underway to improve safety at the Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) and Route 738 (Partlow Road/Anderson Mill Road) intersection in the Chilesburg area of Caroline County. The project will improve sight distance and realign and flatten a curve at the intersection. Dedicated right turn lanes will be added from westbound Ladysmith Road to Partlow Road, and from southbound Partlow Road to Anderson Mill Road. A stop sign will be added to control southbound Partlow Road traffic. The project is expected to be complete in August 2022.
Route 652 (Cool Water Drive) over Polecat Creek
Cool Water Drive was closed to through traffic on March 3, 2022, at the bridge over Polecat Creek, and will remain closed for a bridge replacement project. Significant deterioration was discovered in key bridge elements during a bridge inspection, and VDOT closed the bridge for motorist safety. Motorists should follow signs posted along the recommended detour route. Preliminary engineering is underway on a project to replace the bridge, and work will be accelerated. The new bridge is estimated to open to traffic in September 2023.
Ladysmith Safety Rest Area, I-95 Southbound
Construction is underway to expand the number of parking spaces for trucks and larger commercial vehicles at the Ladysmith Safety Area in Caroline County on I-95 southbound. The rest area remains open to travelers, and existing parking remains available. Construction is anticipated to be complete in May 2022.
City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County
Route 3 Business at Chatham Bridge
Chatham Bridge reopened to vehicle traffic in October 2021 after being closed since June 2020 for an improvement project. Periodic lane closures will be needed as construction work to repair the substructure, below the bridge deck, continues through April 2022.
King and Queen County
Route 631 (Poor House Lane) Bridge Replacement Project
Poor House Lane is closed between Route 14 (The Trail) and Route 630 (DeShazo Road) to replace the bridge over Market Swamp. Detour will be in place through late spring 2022. Signs will be posted along the recommended detour route, which is approximately nine miles:

King George County
The right southbound lane on Route 301 between Roseland Drive and Barnsfield Road will remain closed through Feb. 2022 for bridge construction and realignment of the roadway as part of a Maryland Transportation Authority project to replace the Nice-Middleton Bridge over the Potomac River. Right northbound lane on Route 301 is closed. Starting Monday, March 14, the left northbound lane on Route 301 will close and remain closed through May 2022.
Richmond County
Route 637 (County Bridge Road)
County Bridge Road is closed to through traffic at the bridge over Cat Point Creek due to damage following heavy rain and flooding in summer 2021. The bridge replacement project is in preliminary engineering, and is anticipated to be advertised for construction in August 2023.
Spotsylvania County
Route 1 and Commonwealth Drive
Be alert for construction activity on Route 1 near the Commonwealth Drive intersection, where work is underway to build a nearly 700-space Park & Ride commuter lot. Be alert for work zone barriers along the shoulders of Route 1, and lanes that are shifted to the east near the Commonwealth Drive intersection. Project completion is anticipated in May 2023.
Route 17 Overpass Replacement and Widening
Construction started in December 2020 on a project to replace the existing two-lane interstate overpass on Route 17 with a four-lane bridge. Route 17 will be widened to four travel lanes to just east of the Hospital Boulevard/Germanna Point Drive intersection. Sidewalk, a shared-use path, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be added as part of the project. Improvements will be completed in Feb. 2024.
Lafayette Boulevard Turn Lane Extension
Construction is underway to extend the existing southbound right turn lane on Lafayette Boulevard from Harrison Road to Lee Street. This will improve capacity and reduce congestion for southbound traffic turning onto Harrison Road. The project is expected to be complete in May 2022.
Town of West Point and New Kent County
Route 30/33 (Eltham Bridge)
Westbound single lane closure on Eltham Bridge, with work zone barrier. This lane closure is anticipated to remain in place until spring 2022. Crews are identifying locations where a future project will repair post-tensioned bridge girders.
