Spring is a popular season in state parks. Nature, especially in spring, can fill us up with happiness, joy, a spark of renewal. It is the perfect time to see budding trees and wildflowers, spot birds and wildlife, to hike a trail, or play in a spring or lake.
Spring Activities
Don’t let this spring be consumed by distractions, take some time to explore the natural world found outside at Virginia State Parks. For some it’s being able to go outside and enjoy the warm weather or hiking a trail we haven’t walked since last fall. For others it’s seeing a familiar bird, finding a reemerging wildflower, or spotting your first turtle. From fishing trips to fun family picnics, spring reinvigorates us for many different reasons.
- Wildflower hikes: Get up close and personal to one of the most beloved spring wildflowers, Virginia Bluebells. Also see mountain laurel, rhododendrons, flame azalea and many more wildflowers.
- Hiking or Biking: With 600 miles of trails, Virginia State Parks offer an endless array of hiking and biking opportunities. From a leisurely stroll through the woods to an exhilarating mountain bike ride, we have it all.
- Wildlife viewing: You’ll find few places better suited to wildlife, whether for its own sake or for your solicitude, than Virginia’s state parks. The well-cared-for habitat is as healthy as it is beautiful.
- Birding: Not many places can match Virginia’s abundance and variety of birds. From the tiny ruby-throated hummingbird to the 50-inch long tundra swan, you’re sure to find a favorite feathered friend in the commonwealth.
