8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.Bear Creek Lake State Park a Gateway to Nearby Parks
Location: Bear Creek Lake, Sailor’s Creek State Park, High Bridge Trail State Park
Bear Creek Lake is an ideal basecamp for exploring other parks in the central piedmont of Virginia. Four other Virginia State Parks are less than an hour’s drive from Bear Creek Lake.
If you are interested in history, Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, the scene of horrific fighting during the final days of the Civil War, is just a 40 minute drive. Or if trails are more your thing, you can experience the majesty of High Bridge Trail State Park, a 31-mile long rail-to-trail from Burkeville to Pamplin featuring the 2,422 long High Bridge, which can be accessed from several different parking areas.
Neither of those parks have overnight accommodations, but fit perfectly in your Bear Creek Lake experience. Contact the individual parks directly for information on their activities and event fees. Your valid Bear Creek Lake parking pass will be honored when you visit any other Virginia State Park.
To make an overnight reservation for a Bear Creek Lake cabin or campsite, contact the Customer Service Center at 1-800-PARK (7275).

Location: several trailheads within the park
One feature of our trail network is the Channel Cat Trail. On this loop trail, accessible from many points on the campground side of the park, we have placed a series of signs to acquaint you with the park’s unique piedmont environment.

A third section from the CMT parking northwestward back to the Lake’s spillway is for your own reflections on the wonders of nature. The park’s role in the Chesapeake Bay watershed is also noted.
These sections can be walked in either direction, one part at a time, or as a loop to bring you full circle.
The entire loop is just under two miles long and the trail is of a moderate difficulty rating. There is one shallow creek crossing and unlevel terrain, but no steep inclines.

Tours of the Hillsman House, a National Historic Landmark, are available to the public by request. Constructed in the 1780’s with a wing added in 1815, the home was occupied by Federal forces during the final days of the Civil War in Virginia on April 6, 1865.
Used as a Field Hospital, Federal Surgeons treated the wounded from both sides of the conflict during the Battles of Sailor’s Creek, while the Hillsman family took shelter in the cellar.
Today, based on historic accounts from Lt. George Peck of the 2nd Rhode Island who was wounded crossing the creek and treated in the house, the interior is interpreted to look just as it appeared in 1865.
Touring the historic home site is free to the public, however, due to staffing availability and occasional adverse weather conditions, it is highly recommended that visitors call ahead to make a reservation. When available, education specialists provide tours for individuals, families and large groups.
For questions and to make a reservation, please call the Visitor Center at (804) 561-7510.
