River paddling at Virginia State Parks
From the ancient and meandering New River to headwaters of the Rappahannock, all the way to the expansive estuaries of the mighty Potomac, Virginia’s history is tied to its rivers. Rivers offer paddling guests the best avenues for exploring the commonwealth’s history, culture and wildlife.
Popular river paddling destinations
-
- Powhatan State Park has no boat rentals or shuttle, but Maiden Voyage Outfitters offer rentals and a shuttle service. The park offers two cartop boat slides to travel a distance of 2.5 miles on the James River. A third launch is only for campers who stay at the canoe-in/hike-in primitive campground. The park is also ideal for checking out the James River Batteau Festival each June.

- At Foster Falls, New River Trail State Park rents boats and has a shuttle service seven days a week from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Guests may canoe, kayak or float four different sections of the river along the park.
- Shenandoah River has paddle-in campsites and 5.2 miles of shoreline. There are many public river access points along the South Fork Shenandoah from the Inskeep Boat Ramp at Bixler Bridge through the Front Royal Boat Ramp. This is ideal for experienced paddlers wanting to canoe and camp. Beginners and those needing a boat should contact one of the outfitters just outside the park.
