King George Sheriff’s Office warns about political sign destruction

by | Oct 28, 2020 | Police and Fire

From The King George Sheriff’s Office:

We want to remind everyone that signs are personal property. If a sign is on property with the permission of the property owner, then vandalizing the sign is misdemeanor property damage (Code of Virginia, 18.2-137), with a sentence up to 12 months in jail, or up to $2,500 fine, or both jail and fine. Stealing a sign is petit larceny (Code 18.2-96), with the same punishment options above. Committing the above crimes on posted property will add the charge of trespassing (Code of Virginia 18.2-119), also a misdemeanor with a sentence of up to 12 months in jail, or up to $2,500 fine, or both.
We are keeping an eye on the signs throughout the county and making extra efforts to ensure they are not being damaged and/or stolen.
