From the City of Fredericksburg:
This weekend’s protest/demonstrations were supported by the City, and monitored by our Police Department. Officers worked to stage one block from the protests to help divert traffic while protesters exercised their First Amendment rights. The 911 Communications Center dispatchers are informing callers that public safety is being prioritized at all times, and to direct complaints to the City Manager’s office.
The suggestion that City Council has directed Police to NOT respond is inaccurate. City Police continue to monitor/ensure the safety of all in our community.
Mayor Greenlaw and Councilwoman Devine met yesterday and again today (6/16/20) with protest organizers. A regular meeting schedule is now being set to ensure continued dialogue. Additionally, the Citizen Advisory Panel met yesterday and is crafting next steps which include forming a Charter/bylaws, etc. Lastly, City Council has called a Special Meeting this Thursday, June 18. It will be aired at 5:30pm, and can be accessed at www.regionalwebtv.com/fredcc.
