A message to our community:
The Culpeper Police Department is always committed to the core principal that everyone will be treated with dignity and respect. Our department is comprised of highly trained professionals who are constantly working to maintain the safety, security, and rights of all individuals.
The Culpeper Police Department continues to provide the highest level of service to our community. Our department voluntarily committed itself to become an Advance Accredited agency by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA®). We received our first Advance Accreditation in 2005 and have continued to hold that accreditation to today. Since 2017, our policies and procedures are now reviewed annually by law enforcement professionals from across the country to ensure that we are meeting the highest standards and following best practices. Within Virginia, only 34 out of 340 law enforcement agencies are CALEA accredited. Of the 34 accredited agencies, only a handful have obtained Advanced Accreditation.
The Culpeper Police Department always strives for transparency. All officers wear body-worn cameras and all patrol vehicles are equipped with in-car cameras. When the body-worn camera program was initiated in 2016, we invited our local NAACP chapter and other community organizations to help us craft our policies and procedures. Whenever our local NAACP chapter or other community organizations reaches out to our Command Staff with any concerns about officer-involved incidents, they know our door is open. They have always been, and will continue to be, invited to review our policies, procedures, and recordings of any incident in question. To maintain community trust, the Culpeper Police Department actively investigates all allegations of officer misconduct to ensure we are holding ourselves accountable to the highest standards of professional law enforcement.
The Culpeper Police Department commits itself to biannual use of force and de-escalation training as well as other continual training throughout the year. Just last month, all officers completed their annual anti-bias based policing training. The NAACP and other community organizations have been invited to and have participated in our use of force and de-escalation training.
We are committed to continuing our strong relationships and trust within our community. We have, and continue to maintain, a great working relationship with our local chapter of the NAACP and other minority organizations. We always encourage and welcome feedback from all community members.
