Garden party to help adults with developmental disabilities

by | Apr 8, 2019 | Events

From the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board:

Rappahannock Adult Activities will host the event from 6-8 p.m. on April 25 at 750 Kings Highway in Stafford County (approximately 3 miles East of the Chatham Bridge). Partygoers will enjoy live music from Karen Jonas and Tim Bray, heavy hors d’ouvres from The Community Café, beer from Spencer Devon Brewing and wine from Kybecca. Additionally, guests will get the chance to purchase RAAI’s popular spring plants before the annual sale begins on April 26. The most popular varieties of flowers, herbs and vegetables often sell out in the first days of the sale.

Tickets will cost $35, and proceeds will provide YMCA memberships, museum passes and swimming passes for participants of RAAI’s day support program. This program allows adults with developmental disabilities to remain in their community, and the money from the Garden Party will offer opportunities for exercise, education and excursions.

“Our goal is to make sure each person in our program gets to do the things they want and love to do and to explore and discover new interests and passions,” said Lacey Fisher, coordinator of day support services for Rappahannock Area Community Services Board.

For more than 40 years, RAAI day support services have helped caregivers be able to maintain jobs and hobbies, while providing adults with developmental disability chances to develop hobbies and friendships. RAAI serves more than 160 individuals in the City of Fredericksburg and counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford.

The Garden Party will kick off the Annual Spring Plant Sale, which will be held April 26—May 11. RAAI participants grow more than 100 plant varieties. Plants will be available for purchase: Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. The sale will feature a large selection of annuals, vegetables, herbs and hanging baskets. This year, RAAI has also added succulents and native plants to the sale.

Tickets for the Garden Party can be purchased through RAAI or online, http://bit.ly/RAAIGardenParty. For details, call RAAI at 540/373-7643 or visit rappahannockareacsb.org.
