Federal District Judge Claude M. Hilton has signed an order extending the voter registration deadline in Virginia through 11:59 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2016.
“I am pleased that the court has agreed with the request to extend Virginia’s voter registration period after unprecedented web traffic prevented many people from completing their registrations online before the original deadline,” said Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
The ruling came after the online voter registration system crashed on Monday, Oct. 17, the original voter registration deadline.
“The Virginia Department of Elections and the Virginia Information Technology Agency have been working overtime since Monday night to expand the capacity of the system that allows Virginians to register to vote online, and I am confident that the steps we have taken will provide an improved experience to people who use it,” McAuliffe said.
This extension provides all eligible Virginians the opportunity to participate in the 2016 November General Election by registering to vote online, in-person and through the mail on or before October 21, 2016.
You can check your voter registration status online.
Voters may complete registration applications in-person at a local election official office, at Department of Motor Vehicles Customer Service Centers, and at other Virginia government agencies. Learn more at Virginia’s How To Register webpage.
