A graduate of Spotsylvania County’s Courtland High School is paralyzed from the waist down following a car crash on Christmas Eve.

Vicki Varner was home for the holidays after her first semester at Missouri Valley College. The high school softball standout pitched for the college softball team on an athletic scholarship.

At 11:29 p.m. December 24, 2015, Vicki’s older brother R.J. missed a curve and struck a tree in the 10000 block of Tower Road in Orange County, Va. The Varner accident is the sixth crash in that section of road since January 2012, according to Virginia Department of Transportation and Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles statistics.

College softball teammate Olivia Paz has started a GoFundMe page called Vicki’s Recovery Fund. It reads:

“Early Christmas morning, our good friend and Missouri Valley softball teammate, Vicki Varner, was in a serious car accident in her hometown of Spotsylvania, Va. She sustained critical internal injuries and has severed her spine, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.

“Despite being aware of the struggles that lie before her, her positive disposition and sense of humor are still shining through, letting those around her know that she will get through this. And yet her recovery is sure to be long and extensive, with several surgeries on the near horizon.

“To ease some of the financial burden acquired from medical bills, equipment costs, and loss of work by her parents, we are asking for your financial support. We know any donations will be greatly appreciated by her family as they work through this challenging time.”

Friends have also created the Prayers for Vicki Varner Facebook page.
