The City of Fredericksburg received a Virginia Municipal Achievement award from the Virginia Municipal League (VML) for the gun give-back program initiated by Councilman Charlie Frye in 2014.

“The city’s gun give-back was an unprecedented alternative to a state regulated, buy-back program,” said Fredericksburg Police Chief David Nye. “Earning a VML award for the program is a true honor, and it reaffirms our commitment to keeping guns off the streets and out of the hands of criminals.”

Local philanthropist Doris Buffet offered a $100 donation to a choice of four charities for every gun turned in. A total of $6,700 was raised for Cops and Kids (Shop with a Cop), Empower House, Micah Ministries, and Thurman Brisben Homeless Shelter.

The Fredericksburg Police Department will hold its second annual gun give-back program on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, at Police Headquarters, 2200 Cowan Blvd.

The Virginia Municipal League is a statewide, nonprofit, nonpartisan association of city, town, and county governments.
