Alex Culbreth will perform his acoustic rowdy ramblings with drummer Ryan Hale (up from Richmond) Tuesday and Wednesday. These are Culbreth’s only shows in the ‘Burg this time around, so don’t miss them.
I talked with Culbreth about his move to Austin and how that’s different from music life in Fredericksburg.
You were deeply rooted in Fredericksburg’s music scene. What inspired your move to Austin?
I spent half my life in Virginia. It was time for a change of scenery. I had been to Austin on tour once before I moved, and became enamored with the music scene down there. There are many venues and an endless rotation of people looking to drink, dance and listen to music on any night of the week. Plus, the food is ridiculously amazing down there.
You used to host songwriter’s showcases and collaborate with various musicians in Fredericksburg. Have you shared any Fredericksburg traditions with your Austin contemporaries?
I haven’t been collaborating with any other songwriters since moving. I’ve spent the majority of the last year touring, writing and performing primarily on my own. I play shows with local musicians from time to time, but I enjoy tackling a song or taking on an audience on my own. It keeps band drama to a minimum, as well.
What is the greatest lesson you have learned on this step of the journey?
Wherever you go, there you are.
What is your current inspiration for songwriting?
Travel. Loss. Motel rooms. Bukowski. Pretty Mexican women. Making rent. Vonnegut.
What are your 2015 plans?
I’ve started recording a new album, and I’m working on getting it out sometime in the summer. Other than that, keeping my feet and pen moving.
Culbreth performs Tuesday, March 3, at Bistro Bethem, 309 William St. in downtown Fredericksburg, beginning at 8 p.m. On Wednesday, March 4, he’ll be at Colonial Tavern, 406 Lafayette Blvd., beginning at 9 p.m. There is no cover at either location.
