This isn’t your kids’ spelling bee. It’s for adults only.

There are libations involved.

Trying to distract opponents is actually encouraged.

In the past, some have done the limbo.

Team registration is open for the fourth annual Spotsylvania Lions Club Adult Spelling Bee, set for 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 at the Fredericksburg Country Club. The event is a fun fundraiser, with proceeds supporting a scholarship for a Germanna Community College student, and eye exams and eyeglasses for children and adults in need.

Fredericksburg’s Eileen Griffin, owner of The Griffin Bookshop and Coffee Bar, will be recognized as The 2015 Bee Honoree for outstanding contributions to literacy.

Bob Hagen will emcee. Bee judges are Janel Donohue of the United Way, Cheryl Huff, English professor at Germanna, and Jim Kenkle, retired judge. Ann Woolford, Germanna’s vice president for academic affairs and student services, began the event four years ago.

The cost to register a team of three for is $120.

Sponsorship options include:

Queen Bee: $1,000
Honey Bee: $500
Bee Keeper: $250
Worker Bee individual sponsorship: $120

There’s no admission charge for spectators, and there is a cash bar.
