FoodE won the top prize of Sandwich King in Fredericksburg’s inaugural Sandwich Invitational at Hurkamp Park Thursday evening. The title came with $750. Their winning creation was a chili rubbed boneless beef short rib on a local roll with wild greens and Hyperion Espresso Aioli.
Accepting the prize were (L to R) FoodE Garde Manger Chef Caitlin Ventura, Ashton, Lindsey Marr, and Sous Chef Joe Duplan.
Sprelly won the People’s Choice award, which came with a $500 prize.
Sprelly founders Adrian and Casey Silversmith and Head Chef Eric Shoup accepted the prize.
Honorable mentions went to Liz’z Creative Juices, Capital Ale House and Brock’s Riverside Grill.
Lance Herbert (left) and his father Dion collected nine of the 12 sample sandwiches before sitting down to begin tasting.
The other participating restaurants were 25 30 Espresso, The Bavarian Chef, Bistro Bethem, Eileen’s Cafe and Bakery, J. Brian’s Tap Room, Kenmore Inn and Mason Dixon Cafe.
Fredericksburg resident Richard Simpson was preparing to taste Mason Dixon Cafe’s meatloaf, macaroni and cheese sandwich when this photo was taken.
Bistro Bethem’s sandwich featured fire-roasted porchetta — a savoury, moist boneless pork roast of Italian culinary tradition.
Ashleigh Chevalier and her band provided live music during the Sandwich Invitational.
“Proceeds from the Sandwich Invitational will go to the Fredericksburg Main Street Initiative to help re-energize downtown,” said Karen Hedelt, director of Fredericksburg Economic Development and Tourism. “Our restaurants are such an important part of our new energy.”
The Sandwich Invitational kicks-off Fredericksburg’s fourth annual Summer Restaurant Week. August 1 – 10 guests can choose 2 for $20 specials at 17 participating restaurants. A list of participating restaurants and sample menus are available online.
