Orange County High School students witnessed a mock crash demonstration designed to highlight the dangers of impaired driving.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says the event was made possible through the collaboration between the County of Orange Fire and EMS, Orange Volunteer Fire Department, Virginia State Police, Preddy’s Funeral Home, A&M Towing, AirCare 6, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and Orange County Public Schools.
A Facebook posting says the demonstration recreated a realistic crash scene where teens made the decision to drink and drive after prom — a decision that resulted in tragic consequences. From the frantic 911 call to the arrival of first responders, the medical treatment, the extraction of victims, and even the somber involvement of the funeral home, every moment was designed to show students how quickly life can change forever.
The Sheriff’s Office says driving under the influence doesn’t just affect the driver — it endangers everyone on the road. It can result in serious injuries, loss of life, criminal charges, lifelong guilt, and the heartbreak of families and communities. In just a few seconds, a single poor decision can cause irreversible damage.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says: “Events like today’s mock crash are difficult to watch, but they are essential. They drive home a message that statistics and lectures alone cannot: impaired driving is dangerous, deadly, and entirely preventable. We sincerely hope today’s demonstration leaves a lasting impact. We encourage every student — and every member of our community — to think twice, make safe choices, and never drive impaired. Protect yourself, your friends, your loved ones, and everyone else sharing the road.”
