It’s been an honor to write for the Fredericksburg Free Press since just a few months after the site’s launch. The experience has allowed me to reconnect with familiar faces, meet new folk and return to reporting on the area that I covered from 1997 until the mid-2000s.
My top five stories of 2024 are as follows:
For 50 years, GWRideConnect has helped carpoolers get with the program
- I like this story because it surprised me in how good it ended up being; the stories interviewees told me were even more interesting than I imagined they would be.
Voters turn out at the polls with concerns including abortion, inflation
2. Election Day is like the Super Bowl for journalists, so I liked this story because it marked the first time I had written an Election Day story in a few years.
Seizure aimed to provide a stable environment for Stafford County horses
3. This story is memorable because it kind of asks an interesting question: Who knows what’s best for wayward horses, an equine trainer, or the county animal control?
The Buc-ee’s stops here? Stafford residents put off by potential gas giant
4. This story is the first in what will be ongoing coverage. Is this popular convenience station chain popular enough to overcome organized local opposition?
5. This one is bittersweet. I obviously would rather have my dog back than have this column, but I felt it was necessary to memorialize him in this way.
