Update, 2:30 p.m.: According to an automated call FCPS parents received Friday afternoon, the lockdown occurred after a man was seen acting erratically in the Walker-Grant Middle School parking lot. He was initially asked to leave the premises but returned, prompting a lockdown.

Per school division policy, if one school on Learning Lane goes on lockdown, the other follows suit.

According to FPD Interim Public Information Officer Jessica Carter, no arrests were made or charges filed.

Update, 2:05 p.m: According to a message from FCPS, “police department working in collaboration with school administration, determined there was no longer any safety concern” and indoor instruction was lifted. Both schools have resumed normal school functions.

Two schools in the Fredericksburg region have moved to indoor instruction after being placed in lockdown around 1 p.m.

At 1:13 p.m., separate alerts went out from the city and the school system that both Walker Grant Middle School and Lafayette Upper Elementary were on lockdown out of caution for a suspicious person in the area. That was then followed by a message from Fredericksburg City Public Schools that they would move to indoor instruction with everyone remaining inside.

Both messages noted that all students, teachers and staff were safe and that officers and School Resource Officers were on scene. According to the police alert, there is no threat to the public.
