Expect overnight delays at the Falmouth Bridge for the next ten days

by | Aug 19, 2024 | Fredericksburg, Stafford, Ted Schubel, Traffic

VDOT says expect brief overnight delays on the evenings of Monday. Aug. 19-Thursday, Aug. 29 at the Falmouth Bridge.

Lane closures and intermittent traffic stops have been scheduled at the bridge at the following times, weather permitting:

Monday, August 19 – Thursday, August 29 (ending early Friday, Aug. 30)

Route 1 northbound and southbound

7 p.m. – 7 a.m. nightly

Single lane closures

Lane closures will alternate directions

Full traffic stops for up to 15-minute intervals will occur between 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22 and 5:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, and again between 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27 and 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28.

VDOT’s Kelly Hannon says traffic stops will always be lifted immediately if an emergency response vehicle needs to travel through the work zone.

A major rehabilitation project is currently in the design phase to improve the structure’s condition, scheduled to begin in Fiscal Year 2029. The project cost is estimated at $86.2 million.

Hannon says during these current tests, VDOT and contractor crews will perform live load tests on the bridge. Sensors placed on the bridge will measure the structure’s response to vehicles of various weights crossing the bridge. Intermittent traffic stops of up to 15 minutes are needed on several evenings so trucks loaded to a specific weight can cross the bridge separately from general traffic.
