Spotsylvania county attorney instructed to work with state police in undisclosed investigation

The Holbert Building was nearly clear of residents by the time the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors meeting ended Tuesday night.

But important business still remained, as the board voted unanimously to authorize County Attorney Karl Holsten to cooperate with the Virginia State Police in an ongoing investigation regarding the actions of a person subject to the oversight of a public body in the county.

Courtland District Supervisor Drew Mullins made the motion, which was approved by the board moments before the meeting was adjourned.

Board Chair Jacob Lane was unavailable for comment after the meeting. Supervisor Lori Hayes declined to comment on the motion when reached by phone.

Spotsylvania Director of Community Engagement and Tourism Michelle McGinnis, who handles press inquiries for the county, said no officials will elaborate on the directive from the board because it is an ongoing investigation.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Brent Coffey said he was instructed by the Bureau of Criminal Investigations not to elaborate on the situation.

The Free Press reached out to Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office Maj. Troy Skebo, who said that the investigation does not involve the sheriff’s office but could be related to another county employee who is under the board’s purview.

Also on Tuesday night, supervisors pledged to find a solution for Virginia Heritage residents in a dispute with builder Lennar over its work in the 55-and-over residential subdivision. More than 150 residents attended the meeting and expressed concern that a previous board released bonds to Lennar for work that was subpar.

The board also approved a water and wastewater infrastructure agreement with Amazon Data Services for data centers at the Cosner Corner Tech Campus, Summit Crossing Tech  and Carter’s Store Tech.

The agreement was a part of the consent agenda, which also included the appointment of NAACP President Moe Petway to the Minority Affairs Committee and the reappointment of Hayes to the Central Rappahannock Regional Library Board as an at-large member.
