The body of a Richmond man was found Sunday morning in a wooded area in Caroline County alongside Sparta Road.
Caroline Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area after receiving a 911 call at 11:47 a.m. from a citizen reporting the discovery of a dead body near where Sparta Road intersects with Tignor Road.
After deputies confirmed the death, they secured the surrounding area until forensic investigators and personnel from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner responded to examine and process the scene.
Investigators worked throughout the evening to identify the man, who was later determined to be 51-year-old Reginald Terrance Holmes. Holmes likely died as the result of several gunshot wounds, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.
The release also stated that investigators worked “around the clock” to collect “significant evidence” on the case with assistance from the FBI, the Richmond City Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Virginia State Police.
Those agencies determined that it was an isolated incident, and there was no ongoing threat to the public.
“The Caroline County Sheriff’s Office is diligently investigating this incident, and using all available resources to ensure justice is found for the death of Mr. Reginald Holmes,” Sheriff Scott Moser said. “My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Holmes’ family during this difficult time.”
