VDOT says a new traffic signal will be activated next week on Route 1 in Spotsylvania at the entrance to a Veterans Health Administration clinic. The traffic signal is located on Route 1 between the Mine Road and Market Street intersections. The signal will initially serve construction and employee traffic prior to the clinic opening.
The signal will begin to direct motorists after 9 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27. The signal’s lights will begin to flash on Monday, March 25 as a warning to alert travelers to the upcoming new traffic pattern. Message boards will be posted on Route 1 northbound and southbound approaching the intersection.
When the signal is activated on March 27, dual left turns will open from Route 1 northbound into the clinic site. Route 1 southbound traffic will use a right turn lane to enter the clinic site. For traffic departing the clinic site, a single left turn lane to Route 1 northbound will be available during limited hours. Due to the traffic volumes on Route 1 close to the Interstate 95 interchange at exit 126 (Spotsylvania), left turns departing the clinic site will not be permitted during the following times:
- 7-8:30 a.m. weekdays
- 3:30-6 p.m. weekdays
- Saturdays and Sundays
- During traffic incidents
Right turns from the clinic onto Route 1 southbound will be permitted 24 hours a day. Dual right turn lanes onto Route 1 southbound have been built at the clinic site exit. A second entrance to the Veterans Health Administration clinic is under construction on Route 636 (Hood Drive), where left and right turns will be permitted 24 hours a day.
