The on-ramp from Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) to southbound Interstate 95 in Spotsylvania County will be closed from 11 p.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday and again from 11 p.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Wednesday.
Route 606 motorists who normally use Exit 118 to access I-95 southbound are encouraged to use Exit 126 (Spotsylvania) or Exit 110 (Ladysmith) in Caroline County during the closures.
The on-ramp is closing for the widening of Mudd Tavern Road, which is nearing completion.
Travelers on Mudd Tavern and Morris Road in Thornburg should also stay alert for a temporary travel lane shift on Route 606 between I-95 and the area west of Route 1.
The eastbound and westbound lanes of Mudd Tavern and Morris were to be shifted slightly to the right starting this past weekend. This shift will create space for construction crews to build medians that will separate eastbound and westbound traffic on Mudd Tavern and Morris, and accommodate work on other projects.
Two road-improvement projects are being built through a single construction contract in Thornburg. A $25.7 million project is widening Mudd Tavern to four lanes between I-95 and just west of Route 1.
At the same time, crews are working on a $9.1 million project that created Route 2092, a new secondary road parallel to Mudd Tavern that will intersect with Dan Bell Lane and South Roxbury Mill Road. Construction began in 2023 and is scheduled for completion in late May.
When the project is finished, Mudd Tavern will have a roundabout about halfway between I-95 and Route 1 to provide access for travelers seeking Route 2092.
Route 2092 will be a two-lane road and will improve connections between several properties north of Mudd Tavern. Another roundabout will control traffic at the access road’s midpoint.
Over the next month, travelers can expect overnight lane closures for final paving and pavement marking throughout the work zone.
About 15,000 vehicles a day travel between Route 1 and I-95 on Mudd Tavern.
