VDOT: Route 1 traffic to shift near Mudd Tavern Road in Spotsylvania

by | Apr 21, 2025 | ALLFFP, Spotsylvania, Traffic, Transportation

Route 1 motorists should stay alert for a temporary travel-lane shift near the Route 606 (Morris Road/Mudd Tavern Road) intersection in Spotsylvania County starting Tuesday evening.

The northbound and southbound Route 1 travel lanes will be shifted slightly to the right, creating space for crews to work on median construction, the Virginia Department of Transportation said.

Law enforcement will direct traffic through the Route 1 and Morris Road/Mudd Tavern Road intersection as needed between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday. Alternating lane closures will be in place overnight as traffic is shifted into the new lane locations.

The shift has been scheduled as construction nears completion to widen Mudd Tavern Road to four lanes. About 15,000 vehicles a day travel between Route 1 and Interstate 95 on Mudd Tavern.

Two projects are being built through a single construction contract. A $25.7 million project is widening Mudd Tavern, and an $9.1 million project is building Route 2092, a new secondary road parallel to Mudd Tavern that will intersect with Dan Bell Lane and South Roxbury Mill Road. Construction began in February 2023 and is scheduled for completion in late May.

When work is finished, Mudd Tavern will have a roundabout about halfway between I-95 and Route 1 to provide access for travelers seeking Route 2092.

Route 2092 will be a two-lane road and will improve connections between several properties north of Mudd Tavern in Thornburg. Another roundabout will control traffic at the access road’s midpoint.
