The public hearing on the proposed tax rate for fiscal year 2026 will begin at 7:30 p.m. On April 8, the supervisors voted on an advertised rate of 51 cents per $100 of assessed value, two cents above an equalized rate of 49 cents per $100 of assessed value. They then advertised an equalized rate of 50 cents per $100 of assessed value and proposed 52 cents “because when working to adhere to the explicit language and information required to be included in the notice … staff determined that an equalized rate of $0.50/$100 and a proposed rate of $0.52/$100 are the appropriate rates needed to comply with the requirements of the public notice,” according to a memo from county staff.

The planning commission initiated a text amendment at its Jan. 23 meeting that would amend the zoning ordinance to incorporate civil penalties as a means of obtaining compliance with property maintenance codes and the zoning ordinance. This item, Thursday, is a public hearing for the proposed text amendment which adds provisions and fines for civil penalties.

A week after holding a public hearing on the overall budget, city council will hear from residents on the proposed real estate tax rate of 80 cents per $100 of assessed value, an increase of four cents from last year’s rate. They’ll also vote on a proposed eight-percent increase in water rates and a six-percent increase in sewer rates beginning July 1.

The board will hear a presentation on the Student-to-Student Club at King Georg High, which aims to create a community for military children. The club is a group of students who have active duty, retired, or civilian parents/guardians. Military children involved with the club are surrounded by people who understand the sacrifices and struggles a military child goes through and people who want to listen to and support each other. The club has provided tours of the school to new students from military families, spread awareness of the life of military students and participated in community events to help facilitate a welcoming environment for military children.

A public hearing will be held on Smith Station Crossing, a project applied for by Denali Capital Group, LLC/Tricord, Inc. The applicant requests to rezone approximately 58.50 acres from Residential-1 to Planned Development Housing District 2 with proffers for the development of 99 single-family detached units. The properties are located on the north side of Smith Station Road approximately 780 feet from its intersection with Woodfield Drive. If the project is denied, 36 single-family detached homes could be built on the property. The planning commission recommended approval by a 4-3 vote.
