The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office said Thursday morning that a resident of the Olde Greenwich neighborhood who shot one of the suspects in Tuesday’s shooting will not be charged with a crime.
Maj. Liz Scott said the resident heard what he described as “rapid gunfire” in front of his home. He looked out and saw one male with a long gun in the parking lot and directed a family member to call 911.
He then retrieved his own weapon, fired it and struck the suspect. Scott said the sheriff’s office will not release the condition of the person shot out of concern for the resident who was involved.
“The citizen fired his weapon, striking one of the suspects,” Scott said in a release. “Another neighbor who also witnessed the shooting told the [resident] that there were other shooters nearby. The citizen retreated back into his home and waited for law enforcement.”
Scott said after interviewing witnesses, the sheriff’s office determined that the man will not be charged.
Three males were killed in the incident and three more were wounded. One of the suspects, a 16-year-old, was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound.
The names of the three juveniles who were charged — two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old — were not released by the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office. The lone adult is 18-year-old Jeremiah Upson.
The deceased victims are Alonzo Goffney and Chase Feaster, both 18-year-old Spotsylvania residents. The third victim, a 20-year-old male, was not identified by the sheriff’s office.
Two of the suspects are Spotsylvania County residents and two are residents of Caroline County. All four are charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony and riot/unlawful assembly. More charges could be forthcoming, Spotsylvania Commonwealth’s Attorney Ryan Mehaffey said.
