An illegal gun sale-turned-robbery left three dead and three others wounded Tuesday evening on Olde Greenwich Circle in Spotsylvania County, according to a preliminary investigation by the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office.
Four suspects, including three juveniles, were arrested early Wednesday morning in connection with Tuesday’s shootings.
One of the suspects, a 16-year-old, is currently at a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound.
The names of the three juveniles who were charged — two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old — were not released by the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office. The lone adult is 18-year-old Jeremiah Upson.
Two of the suspects are Spotsylvania County residents and two are residents of Caroline County. Three are now incarcerated with no bond, with the fourth slated to be jailed upon release from the hospital. All four are charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony and riot/unlawful assembly.
“We’re currently working through the evidence and we will be considering additional charges as they’re merited,” Spotsylvania Commonwealth’s Attorney Ryan Mehaffey said.
The three deceased males are: Chase Feaster, 18, of Spotsylvania; Alonzo Goffney, 18, of Spotsylvania, and a 20-year-old whose name is being withheld pending confirmation from the medical examiner’s office.
After Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office Maj. Liz Scott requested nearby residents to stay indoors overnight, there is no longer a threat to the public.
“We commend our detectives on bringing this tragedy to a closure,” Scott said in a release Wednesday morning. “We want to thank our partnership with the Fredericksburg Police Department and the Virginia State Police for their assistance during the investigation. We would certainly be remiss if we didn’t thank our community during what has been a stressful and heartbreaking several days.”
Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania schools both operated on a two-hour delay Wednesday after the sheriff’s office advised that there would be a heavy police presence at bus pickup time in the area where the shootings occurred. Caroline Sheriff Scott Moser released a statement that Spotsylvania authorities informed his office at 7 a.m. Wednesday that two of the suspects alleged to be involved in the incident are Caroline High School students. Moser released a statement that there is no ongoing threat to the county or its schools.
“Out of an abundance of caution and in our continuous commitment to the safety of our community, CCSO will maintain an increased presence at all county schools today,” Moser said. “The CCSO remains in close contact with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office to ensure that we are kept up to date with any new developments.”
