The Virginia Department of Transportation invites the public to learn more about, and comment on, a proposal to install culverts on Route 608 (West Catharpin Road) over Catharpin Run in Spotsylvania County.
An in-person design public hearing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brock Road Elementary School, 10207 Brock Road, Spotsylvania, VA 22553.
The meeting will be held in an open house format, so residents can stop by anytime between 5 and 7 to review displays and the proposed detour plan and discuss questions with VDOT staff.
Comments also can be submitted using an online survey. Feedback will be accepted at the public hearing and afterward through April 17.
Comments may be emailed to [email protected], with “Route 608 Culvert” in the subject line. They may also be mailed to Elyas Jalalzai, VDOT Project Manager, 87 Deacon Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22405.
The proposed $4.1 million project on West Catharpin Road will replace the existing triple corrugated metal drainage pipes underneath the road at Catharpin Run. It also will replace the pipes with a concrete triple box culvert with wing walls. The new culverts will measure 10 feet wide, 6 feet high and 35 feet long.
During construction, West Catharpin Road would be closed at Catharpin Run and traffic would be detoured for an estimated 10 months. The detour would add about 12 minutes of travel time for motorists driving its full length.
The project would be advertised to potential bidders for construction in March 2027, with crews anticipated to mobilize in July 2027.
