Construction to begin on roundabout at Old Plank and Chancellor roads

Starting Monday, crews will begin work on a roundabout at the intersection of Route 610 (Old Plank Road) and Route 674 (Chancellor Road) in Spotsylvania County.

According to a press release, travelers will encounter lane and shoulder closures on Old Plank and Chancellor roads during construction. If necessary, a flagging crew will direct one-way, alternating traffic through the work zone.

Daytime work will take place between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. While most work will be accomplished during the day, periodic overnight work may occur.

As the project progresses, temporary traffic shifts will occur as well.

Construction is expected to be complete in early July. The project is being funded by private development through an agreement with Spotsylvania County. Once complete, the Virginia Department of Transportation will maintain and operate the roundabout.

Roundabouts reduce an intersection’s conflict points that can lead to fatal and severe-injury crashes. The circular design and one-way traffic pattern nearly eliminate the potential for right-angle and head-on crashes. Motorists navigate roundabouts at lower speeds, which gives drivers more time to react. And, free-flowing traffic conditions reduce driver wait times and vehicle idling.

Old Plank Road carries an average of 11,000 vehicles a day in the area near Chancellor Road, according to a 2023 traffic count.
