Fredericksburg residents who live in Ward 3 can apply to fill the vacancy left by Tim Duffy, who announced his resignation at a City Council meeting earlier this month.
According to a press release, Section 7 of the City Charter states that “Vacancies in the Council shall be filled within 45 days [of January 1] by a recorded majority vote of the remaining members of the Council[.]”
Ward 3 residents who are interested in serving as city councilor through the remainder of the current term ending on Dec. 31, 2025, can apply via a two-step process. First, fill out and submit the Boards & Commissions Appointment Application and email a resume to [email protected]. A map of City Wards is available online.
The deadline for applications is Jan. 15 and officials will provide further direction on the appointment at its Jan. 14 meeting, the release stated.
Duffy tearfully announced his resignation Dec. 10, citing personal issues and a desire to be with his family. All four city council “ward” seats will be up for election in November 2025.
In addition to Duffy, Ward 2 councilor Jon Gerlach recently announced that he won’t seek re-election. Anne Little, the founder of Tree Fredericksburg and a former mayoral candidate, told the Free Press earlier this month that she plans to run for the Ward 2 seat. Little has been a fixture at city council meetings and a vocal presence in discussions related to density and growth within the city.
“I believe the city is at a crossroads,” Little wrote in an email. “We need to listen to the people of our city and create a future where all have a voice in how we move forward.”
Residents interested in running for local offices in November 2025 can find information on becoming a candidate on the city’s website.
