The Caroline Sheriff’s Office says after a two-month prescription fraud investigation, two people have been arrested and face a total of 100 felony charges. 45-year-old Sarah Delano and 53-year old Derek Delano have been charged with prescription fraud and conspiracy to commit prescription fraud.
The Sheriff’s Office says the investigation began on October 23rd when the staff at the CVS pharmacy in Ladysmith, who expressed concerns about possible fraud.
Deputy C. Riggle responded and conducted the initial investigation, which identified the Delanos as suspects. Caroline narcotics investigators, with the assistance of the Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Health Professions, uncovered evidence suggesting the fraudulent activity had been ongoing since 2022.
Investigative efforts indicated that Sarah Delano, allegedly posed as a medical professional from a local medical facility, provided accurate business information to pharmacists. The Sheriff’s Office says over the course of two years, she obtained more than 50 fraudulent prescriptions for controlled substances.
Sarah and Derek Delano each face 50 counts of felony prescription fraud and 50 counts of conspiracy to commit prescription fraud.
The Caroline Sheriff’s Office says both suspects were arrested on December 18th and transported to the Pamunkey Regional Jail.
Sarah Delano is being held without bond. Derek Delano was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.
