Work to improve the intersections of Route 1 and Fall Hill Avenue, and Route 1, Hanson Avenue and Princess Anne Street in Fredericksburg will begin Dec. 10.
The $7.4 million improvements to the Route 1 and Fall Hill intersection will include:
- Adding a Route 1 southbound right-turn lane;
- Extending the Route 1 northbound right-turn lane;
- Three lanes on the eastern and western Fall Hill approaches to Route 1;
- Crosswalks and pedestrian signal crossing equipment at each leg of the intersection;
- Extending the raised median along Route 1 and converting a short portion of Amaret Street to a one-way condition, which is aimed at reducing crashes.
The $1.6 million improvements to the Route 1, Hanson and Princess Anne intersection will include:
- Modifying the Route 1 southbound median to provide more space for vehicles turning left onto Princess Anne after the Falmouth Bridge;
- Additional pedestrian accommodations for crossing Route 1.
Intermittent single-lane and shoulder closures will occur for these projects. Most lane closures will occur overnight at both intersections, between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. weekdays (reopening by 6 a.m. on Route 1 northbound) and 10 p.m. and 9 a.m. on weekends. During the first week of construction, crews will install work zone signs.
Work at both intersections will be completed by June 2026. The project contractor is Ardent Co. LLC.
