Construction will begin on a $2.4 million pedestrian-and-bicycle connector project in Fredericksburg next week, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced Monday.
Workers will start on Dec. 3 to extend a 10-foot-wide paved shared-use path along the north side of Lafayette Boulevard between Twin Lake Drive and St. Paul Street. The new pavement will connect with an existing path on Lafayette that currently terminates at St. Paul.
The new section will be fully accessible, with ramps and crosswalks built where the path intersects with Twin Lake, St. Paul, Springwood Drive and Kensington Place.
The project also includes a paved access point to the Virginia Central Railway Trail from the cul-de-sac of Springwood. As part of the project, a bike repair station will be installed at Alum Spring Park.
Work is expected to be completed in November 2025. The majority of the construction will be outside of travel lanes, but drivers may experience occassional delays.
The project contractor is M&F Concrete Inc.
