The week’s top stories

-We spent Election Day talking to voters, a local electoral board chair and registrars. We were at the watch parties for both 7th Congressional District candidates. Read our FFP election recap.

-On the ballot last week in King George was a referendum on a new school. Taft Coghill Jr. followed the issue and reported on the results.

-We love a good brunch. Looks like the Fredericksburg region is getting not one, but two First Watch restaurants, reports Bill Freehling.

-A new state Department of Education accountability framework will rank schools next year. For one local school division, almost half its schools won’t meet expectations.

-Fredericksburg City Schools enacted responsibility-centered discipline in its classrooms for the first time this fall. Joey LoMonaco takes a look at what this means for students and staff.

What they’re saying

“I think it’s clear that the legacy media doesn’t represent the greatest, most effective use of a candidate’s time right now. When you’re thinking about who you need to reach, people who are not reflexively going to vote for you or vote for the other candidate, you’re talking about people who are kind of casual consumers of news at best.”

Stephen Farnsworth, University of Mary Washington political science professor, in a podcast interview with Joey LoMonaco

Go figures (numbers that made the news)

Four: The number of hours of additional holiday leave traditionally afforded to Stafford County employees. A move to adopt the “gift” early this year sent the board of supervisors into a heated discussion.

Pressing on (a look at the week to come)

-Caroline County officials are dismayed by DEQ’s recent suspension of a permit process to withdraw water from the Rappahannock River.  The Town of Bowling Green is already in a water crisis.
