The Caroline High School football team rallied from a 15-0 halftime deficit to claim a 16-15 fourth-quarter lead, but a 35-yard touchdown pass from Chieftain Watson to Kilan Perry lifted host Courtland to a 23-16 Battlefield District victory on Friday night.
Watson completed 6 of 9 passes for 90 yards and a pair of scores, both of which went to Perry.
Laquan Chew and Marcus LaRue paced the rushing attack for the Cougars (7-2 overall, 5-1 district), totaling 58 yards each. Khamari Lawton added a 17-yard TD run.
The Cavaliers (5-4, 3-3) got 286 yards of total offense and two scores from quarterback Malik Johnson. He went 12-of-16 passing for 187 yards and a TD and ran for 99 yards and a score.
Courtland will visit Eastern View next Friday in a matchup of two squads jockeying for position in the Region 4B playoffs, which kick off in two weeks. Meanwhile, Caroline will host James Monroe in its season finale.
Eastern View 31, Chancellor 6
Jahiem Frye scored three touchdowns as the Cyclones proved to be too much for the Chargers in Battlefield District action.
Frye rushed for 109 yards and a pair of scores on just nine carries and added a 23-yard TD reception.
Jordan Hopkins added 53 yards and a score on the ground for Eastern View (6-3, 5-1).
Leo Ferguson completed 13 of 19 passes for 108 yards for Chancellor (2-7, 2-4), which concludes its season with a road game at King George next Friday.
King George 61, Spotsylvania 42
The Foxes withstood the Knights’ upset bid to claim at least a share of the Battlefield District championship for the the fifth straight season.
King George (7-2, 6-0) got big performances from a handful of players in the win. Quarterback Dylan Koch went 10 of 13 for 202 yards and four TDs; Simeon Battle amassed 203 yards and two scores on the ground; Charles Johnson recorded four receptions for 103 yards and a pair of TDs; and Gunnar Reger caught five balls for 86 yards and two scores.
Colton Jones completed 6 of 9 passes for 180 yards with a TD and an interception for Spotsylvania (3-6, 2-4). His 21-yard scoring run pulled the host Knights within 40-35 early in the third quarter, but the Foxes responded with 21 consecutive points to put the contest out of reach. Both of Battle’s TDs came during this stretch.
Jacob Moore ran for 138 yards and a score for Spotsylvania, and Timmy Sullivan chipped in 146 yards and a TD receiving on three receptions.
The Knights will close the regular season with a game at Culpeper next Friday.
Stafford 66, Massaponax 44
The visiting Indians got a combined seven rushing TDs from Zion Gray and Michael Creamer to top the Panthers in a Commonwealth District tilt.
Gray scored three times and Creamer twice to buoy Stafford (8-1, 4-1) to a 33-7 halftime lead.
After TD runs by Joe Sanders and Josiah Perry pulled Massaponax (1-8, 0-5) within 33-22 in the third quarter, the Indians’ dynamic duo went back to work. Gray sandwiched scoring strikes of 21 and 44 yards to KJ Morton around a 52-yard TD run, and Creamer’s 38-yard scoring dash provided the final margin.
Sanders amassed 200 yards for a Massaponax ground game that totaled 505 yards. Josiah Perry added 95 yards and three TDs.
Stafford can earn at least a share of the district title with a home victory over Mountain View next Friday.
North Stafford 20, Mountain View 16
The Wolverines kept their district championship hopes alive, rallying from a 16-0 third-quarter deficit to beat the host Wildcats.
North Stafford (7-2, 4-1) can clinch a share of the district crown with a home win over Colonial Forge (7-2, 3-2) next Friday.
