VDOT says separate right and left turn lanes on Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) will open at the Route 1 intersection in Spotsylvania on Monday, Nov. 4, as construction advances on the $21.6 million road widening project.
A left turn lane, through lane, and right turn lane will be open on Mudd Tavern Road at Route 1 to reduce congestion and driver delays at the intersection.
VDOT’s Darrah Frye says on the same day, traffic on Mudd Tavern Road will be slightly shifted to allow crews to continue widening the road to four lanes between Interstate 95 and Route 1.
As part of the traffic shift, the right turn lane on westbound Mudd Tavern Road to Dan Bell Lane will close until final phase of construction in early 2025.
VDOT says you should follow signs, pavement markings and construction barrels guiding them through the work zone.
The turn lane configuration on Morris Road at Route 1 will remain the same until all waterline work is complete.
Frye says message boards are posted to alert drivers.
Traffic signal timing at the Route 1 intersection will be adjusted to reflect the new lanes.
Construction began in Feb. 2023 and is expected to be complete in May 2025. During 2023, turn lanes closed on Mudd Tavern Road and Morris Road at the Route 1 intersection to provide space for crews to work safely along the road shoulders to build a shared use path, new sidewalk and pedestrian crossings as part of the project.
Mudd Tavern Road carries around 15,000 vehicles a day between Route 1 and I-95.
