Walmart has the largest share of the Fredericksburg-area grocery market, according to an annual study by a food-trade publication.

Walmart captured about 20.1 percent of the Fredericksburg-area grocery market, while Giant placed second with 15.1 percent. Wawa (8.9 percent), CVS (7.8 percent) and Weis Markets (6.5 percent) rounded out the top five.

The data comes from Food World’s most recent annual Market Study Issue. The publication runs an annual, detailed survey of the Mid-Atlantic market that estimates sales of grocery, drug, health and beauty care, and general merchandise products between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024.

Wegmans, which has one store in the market (in Fredericksburg near the Virginia Credit Union Stadium), easily had the highest sales per store ($76.8 million estimate). Giant ($44.7 million per store), Walmart ($42.4 million), Costco ($37.1 million) and BJ’s Wholesale Club ($33.7 million) rounded out the top five in that category.

The Fredericksburg-area market is defined as the city and the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford. Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania are lumped together in the survey. The Virginia locality-by-locality data starts on Page 104 of Food World’s annual Market Study.

The regional data below were compiled from Food World’s locality data. They show each grocer’s estimated sales for each locality, overall regional market share, number of stores in the market, and average sales per store. The grocers are ranked by regional market share.
