Prince William Fire and Rescue says a house exploded in Haymarket on Tuesday evening as firefighters were on the scene responding to a gas leak.

Officials sayFire crews responded to the 5900 block of Colby Hunt Court around 4:17 p.m. for a reported gas leak. Around 5:36 p.m., firefighters informed the department that the house had exploded.

Firefighters had evacuated the house before the explosion.  Initial reports are that an underground contractor struck a natural gas line. Prince William Fire and Rescue said it is currently unclear what led to the explosion.

Homes in the immediate vicinity were allowed to be reoccupied after having their electrical service restored. A total of eight homes in the immediate vicinity will have their natural gas service disrupted for up to 2 days. Several vehicles were also damaged from flying debris.
