The Riverbend High School football team picked up a Commonwealth District road victory over Mountain View Friday night, 13-12, to spoil the Wildcats’ homecoming.
Senior running back JoJo Thomas rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns to propel the Bears (3-2, 1-0 Commonwealth) to the victory.
Mountain View receiver Tyler Tanks scored both Wildcats’ touchdowns on receptions from quarterback Jaylen Castro. The Bears host North Stafford next Friday in another pivotal contest, while Mountain View (3-2, 1-1) hosts Colonial Forge.
Stafford 63, Brooke Point 56
The Indians survived a Commonwealth District shootout with the Black-Hawks behind four rushing touchdowns by standout senior running back Michael Creamer.
Quarterback Zion Gray added two rushing scores to help the Indians (6-0, 2-0 Commonwealth) remain undefeated heading into their bye week before an Oct. 18 trip to rival North Stafford.
The Black-Hawks were paced by more than 450 passing yards and two touchdowns from quarterback Gabe Dombek. Corey Reid scored on three touchdown runs for the Black-Hawks (3-3, 0-2), while Dombek, Jaylen Cox and Anthony Robinson scored one rushing touchdown apiece.
Craig Guyton and Jacob Dalton each had a receiving score for Brooke Point, which visits Massaponax next Friday.
King George 41, Courtland 20
The Foxes (3-2, 2-0 Battlefield District) picked up a big district road victory behind a balanced offensive attack. Quarterback Dylan Koch passed for 204 yards and a touchdown.
Senior Charles Johnson amassed 131 total yards (84 receiving, 47 rushing) and three rushing touchdowns. Running back Simeon Battle rushed for 55 yards and a score. Wide receiver Gunnar Reger recorded four receptions for 100 yards and also scored on a 45-yard run.
Owen Price scored a touchdown on a blocked punt by Jordan Washington. King George returns to action at home next Friday against Culpeper. Courtland (3-2, 1-1) visits Spotsylvania the same night.
Colonial Forge 49, Massaponax 16
Eagles’ quarterback Brock Brimhall passed for five touchdowns to help lead his team to a Commonwealth District home victory.
Brimhall, who finished 7 of 14 for 237 yards, connected with TaySean Jones on touchdown strikes from 53 and 5 yards, respectively. He also found Protus Nyuydze, Darion Majeed and Jake Ashinhurst for one score apiece.
Josiah Bryson rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown and also scored on a 41-yard fumble return. For Massaponax, Ian Shook rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown and Malik Turner added 47 yards on the ground and a score.
Colonial Forge (5-1, 1-1 Commonwealth) visits Mountain View next Friday. Massaponax (1-5, 0-2) hosts Brooke Point.
North Stafford 38, Eastern View 21
The Wolverines won their fourth straight game after a season-opening defeat to Dinwiddie behind 236 passing yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Chase Sullivan.
Micah Brown rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown and also recorded 65 receiving yards and a score for the Wolverines (4-1). Brown scored on an 8-yard run and a 41-yard reception.
Kenaz Sullivan and Twan Barnes scored on touchdown receptions of 21 and 26 yards for North Stafford, while Kaydan Bowens added a 12-yard touchdown run. The Wolverines built a 31-13 halftime lead and overcame 22 penalties for 158 yards to earn the win.
North Stafford visits Riverbend next Friday.
Caroline 26, Culpeper 21
The Cavaliers rallied from a 21-6 first-half deficit to earn a Battlefield District road victory.
Caroline (4-1, 2-1 Battlefield) was paced by senior running back Vladimir Joacin’s 158 rushing yards and a touchdowns on 24 carries. Junior running back Tre Coles added two touchdown runs. The Cavaliers’ defense pitched a shutout in the second half. Junior cornerback Blake Morris and sophomore cornerback Zayvion Tompkins recorded one interception each. Linebacker David McCarthy recovered two Culpeper fumbles.
Senior tight end Ty’Eir Williams scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:41 remaining in the game when he recovered a teammate’s fumble in the end zone. The defense then forced a three-and-out and Joacin ran out the clock to secure the win.
Caroline returns to action next Friday at Chancellor.
Chancellor 21, James Monroe 12
The Chargers earned their first win of the season in a hard-fought Battlefield District victory over James Monroe on the Yellow Jackets’ homecoming.
Quarterback Leo Ferguson threw three touchdown passes for the Chargers (1-4, 1-1 Battlefield), who led 14-6 at halftime. Logan Hunter hauled in two of Ferguson’s scoring passes from 6 and 12 yards, while Nate Newton caught the other, a 29-yard reception.
Senior wide receiver Mike Edwards caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Jude Hardy for JM (2-3, 0-2), while Kam Kea recorded the other score on a 1-yard run.
Chancellor hosts Caroline next Friday. James Monroe hosts Eastern View the same night.
Fredericksburg Christian 48, Smith Mountain Lake Christian 0
Christian Ray ran for three touchdowns and Trip Blalock and Tim Esunge added one score each on the ground for the undefeated Eagles (6-0).
Bishop Heard-Samuels hauled in a touchdown pass and Aaron Bon-Ami scored on a fumble return for FCS, which looks to continue its unbeaten run next Saturday at home against Fork Union Military Academy.
