The Spotsylvania High School football team held on for an emotional 17-14 victory over host Atlee on Friday night.
Manny Duah scored on runs of 5 and 7 yards, respectively, to buoy the Knights to a 17-7 halftime lead, and the defense held off the Raiders down the stretch to seal the win.
Duah rushed for 166 yards on 40 carries. The Knights rushed for 212 yards as a team. Michael Bonilla connected on a 25-yard field goal.
Spotsylvania (1-3) was playing just six days after the passing of head coach Conway Reid’s son. Trevor Reid, 21, died in a motorcycle accident on Saturday in Spotsylvania County.
Former Knights and Fredericksburg Christian School head coach Tim Coleman coached the team in Reid’s absence. Conway Reid was the starting quarterback and Coleman the head coach on Spotsylvania’s 1994 state championship team.
The Knights return to Battlefield District action when they visit Chancellor next Friday.
Caroline 26, King William 21
Caroline survived a back-and-forth fourth quarter to hold on for a heart-stopping 26-21 nondistrict victory over visiting King William Friday night.
Caroline senior wide receiver Malik Johnson scored on his third catch-and-run of the night, an 11-yard game winning burst with 1:22 remaining.
King William converted two fourth downs and Caroline picked up a 15-yard face mask penalty on the final drive. But Caroline defenders tackled King William quarterback Trenton Stallings as time expired to secure a 3-0 start to the season for the first time since 2007.
Caroline entered the fourth quarter leading 14-7 and was driving to build a two-score lead but fumbled inside the King William 20. K’Sean Hill scooped up the loose ball and sprinted 80 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 14 with 9:42 remaining.
Caroline responded when Johnson took a short pass from quarterback Peyton Fletcher 45 yards for a score and a 20-14 lead that was short-lived. Hill took the reverse on the ensuing kickoff and broke loose for an 80-yard TD and a 21-20 lead with 6:33 to go.
Caroline’s next possession ended in an interception, but the defense forced a three-and-out. Caroline took over with 1:42 remaining and Fletcher immediately connected with junior wide receiver Blake Morris on a 51-yard catch-and-run to the King William 11-yard line, setting the stage for Johnson’s final TD.
Fletcher completed 19 of 29 passes for 288 yards and three scores, all to Johnson, who ended the night with nine catches for 148 yards. Senior running back Vladimir Joacin added 81 yards on the ground. Junior running back Tre Coles scored on a 1-yard run, while defensively, senior defensive end Ty’Eir Williams recorded two sacks and sophomore cornerback Zayvion Tompkins intercepted his first pass of the season.
Caroline returns to action next Friday at home against Battlefield District foe Eastern View.
Eastern View 34, Brooke Point 27
The host Cyclones exploded for 21 third-quarter points en route to a nondistrict win over the Black-Hawks.
Trailing 14-7 to start the second half, Eastern View QB AP Hull scampered 16 yards to tie the score at 14. Brett Clatterbaugh followed that with a 13-yard TD run, and then hauled in a 48-yard scoring strike from Hull later in the quarter to give the Cyclones (2-1) a 28-14 lead.
Clatterbaugh was also on the receiving end of a 27-yard TD pass from Hull in the opening period. The Virginia Tech commit finished the night with seven receptions for 137 yards.
Hull went 12-of-18 passing for 227 yards with two TDs and an interception, and rushed for 99 yards and a pair of scores n 14 carries.
Brooke Point (3-1) was paced by QB Gabe Dombek, who completed 30 of 51 passes for 383 yards with three TDs and an INT. Two of his scoring passes went to Craig Guyton, who had eight catches for 127 yards. Jacob Dalton added seven receptions for 117 yards.
Eastern View visits Caroline in Battlefield District action next Friday, while Brooke Point opens Commonwealth District play by hosting North Stafford.
North Stafford 26, Briar Woods 14
Micah Brown’s 235 yards and four TDs sparked the visiting Wolverines to a nondistrict victory over the Falcons.
Brown found the end zone on runs of 1, 66, 69 and 44 yards, respectively.
Chase Sullivan went 11-of-22 for 87 yards through the air for North Stafford (2-1), which kicks off Commonwealth District competition at Brooke Point next Friday.
Stafford 45, Independence 36
Michael Creamer ran for four touchdowns as the Indians picked up a nondistrict road win.
Zion Gray and Deandre Monroe also found the end zone once each for Stafford (4-0), which is off to its best start since beginning 5-0 in 2017. That season, the Indians advanced all the way to the state semifinals.
Stafford will host fellow unbeaten Colonial Forge next Friday in the Commonwealth District opener for both squads.
Matoaca 41, Massaponax 19
The Panthers fell to 1-3 on the season after a setback at home to Matoaca. Josiah Perry rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown for Massaponax. Ian Shook added 54 rushing yards and another score. The Panthers open their Commonwealth District schedule at home Friday against Mountain View.
