The Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank has received a $50,000 donation from Publix Super Markets Charities to support the purchase of healthy food options in keeping with its use of the Healthy Eating Research (HER) guidelines to help direct neighbors served to healthier lifestyle choices.
Publix officials say their investment in food purchasing will help support food acquisition to benefit the Food Bank’s community partner pantries and internally operated food distribution programs. These partners and programs serve over 40,000 people annually across Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford counties, the City of Fredericksburg, and the community of Locust Grove.
Across that region, nine percent of the overall population is determiend to be food insecure–lacking the means to consistently self-provide three nutritious meals a day, with food insecurity experienced by 11 percent of that area’s children.
The HER guidelines followed by the Food Bank and its partner pantries rate foods as green, yellow, or red to guide recommended eating habits. Green foods are recommended for frequent consumption to promote healthier living, yellow foods are recommended for occasional consumption, and red foods are items that should only be eaten infrequently.
Total monetary donations from Publix to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank to nearly $150,000 since 2022.
