The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a loaded gun found in a 6-year-old student’s backpack at Orange Elementary School on Monday afternoon.
A statement released by the Orange Sheriff’s Office says at about 12:50 pm, a school resource officer was contacted by Orange Elementary School staff about a loaded firearm that was found inside the school.
The investigation found that a 6-year-old student brought the firearm on campus where it was found by an instructional assistant. Nobody was injured and no threats were made prior to the discovery of the firearm.
The Orange County Sheriff’s office is investigating this incident. No arrests have been made at this point, but the investigation is ongoing. “The safety and security of our students and school staff remain our top priority,” the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office will have additional law enforcement at the school on Tuesday. A press release said no more details will be released pending the outcome of the investigation.
