The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) invites the public to learn more and comment on a project that would modify the intersection of Route 1 and Augustine Avenue in the City of Fredericksburg and at adjacent connections.

This proposed project aims to improve safety and traffic operations between the Route 1 and Stafford Avenue intersection and the Route 1 and College Avenue/Eagle Village Drive intersection.

Proposed design improvements include:

  • Addition of a right turn lane on southbound Route 1 onto Augustine Avenue
  • Restricting right turns from Route 1 northbound onto Augustine Avenue (east of Route 1)
  • Removing access to enter/depart Snowden Drive at Route 1, along both the east and west sides of Route 1
  • Revisions to the curb and median islands would be made along the west side of Route 1 at the Powhatan Street/Augustine Avenue intersection
  • Remove the service road along the west side of Route 1 from Eagle Village Drive to Augustine Avenue
  • Install sidewalk, pedestrian ramps and pedestrian crossing signal equipment across Eagle Village Drive at the Route 1 intersection
  • Install sidewalk along the west side of Route 1 between Eagle Village Drive and Stafford Avenue
  • Relocate the right turn stop bars on Eagle Village Drive and College Avenue at the Route 1 intersection

The project is being funded through Virginia’s SMART SCALE state transportation program. The application for this project was submitted by the City of Fredericksburg.

An in-person design public hearing will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 5-7 p.m. at Hugh Mercer Elementary School (2100 Cowan Boulevard Fredericksburg, VA 22401). In the event a backup date is needed, the hearing will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Oct. 2 at the same location.

Stop by the public hearing anytime between 5-7 p.m. to review displays and proposed plans and discuss questions with VDOT staff.

The meeting will be held in an open-house format. The public can view project materials on the project page and submit comments using an online survey.

Questions asked on the design public hearing comment sheet are identical to questions asked in the online survey form, open through Oct. 5. Comments on the project will be accepted at the public hearing, and afterward through Oct. 5.

Comments may also be submitted by mailing them to Mr. Elyas Jalalzai, VDOT Project Manager, 87 Deacon Road, Fredericksburg, V.A. 22405. They can also be emailed to [email protected]. Please reference “Route 1 and Augustine Avenue” in the email subject line.

The project would be advertised to potential bidders for construction in May 2027.
