The Chancellor and Riverbend football teams hope to resume the season-opener that was halted Friday night with 44 seconds left in the third quarter when a Chargers player appeared to suffer a severe injury.
Chargers head coach Neil Sullivan said senior guard James Smith was released from the hospital early Saturday morning after being transported in an ambulance unable to feel his left arm.
Sullivan said the injury turned out to be more of a “stinger” or a severe sprain.
Sullivan said he and others who witnessed the injury are thankful for the “good news.”
“He’s going to be alright,” Sullivan said. “That’s where all our hearts were.”
Sullivan said Chancellor Athletic Director Len Carlson and Riverbend AD Jesse Lohr are working to arrange a time to complete the contest that the Bears were leading 21-3.

BROOKE POINT 36, KING GEORGE 33: The host Black-Hawks rallied from a 12-7 halftime deficit to hand the Foxes their first regular-season loss in five years.

Brooke Point quarterback Gabe Dombek completed 17 of 27 passes for 178 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another 97 yards. Two of his three scoring strikes came during the pivotal third quarter, when the Black-Hawks turned the game on its ear by scoring 22 unanswered points.

Caden Johnson proved to be a fine complement to Dombek, rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown.

King George quarterback Dylan Koch went 21 of 36 for 292 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in his first varsity start. Three of those went to Ky’Mani Carpenter, who finished with seven catches for 126 yards.

Simeon Battle totaled 86 yards rushing for the Foxes and returned a kickoff 80 yards for a score that pulled them within 36-33 with just over a minute left to play. The Black-Hawks were able to run out the clock after recovering King George’s onside kick attempt, however.

The Foxes’ last regular-season setback was a 41-14 loss at Eastern View on Oct. 18, 2019–a span of 39 games.

Both teams will hit the road next week, with Brooke Point (1-0) visiting Spotsylvania on Friday and King George (0-1) traveling to Hampton on Saturday.
