VDOT says to advance road and bridge widening under construction on Southpoint Parkway in Spotsylvania, crews will install 24-hour lane closures at the Route 1 intersection beginning next week.
VDOT encourages drivers to use alternate routes to Southpoint Parkway starting Tuesday, Aug. 20, through mid-September.
The extended lane closures are anticipated to cause delays on Southpoint Parkway and northbound Route 1, especially during peak travel periods.
The long-term lane closures are necessary for traveler and work zone safety. Crews are widening the existing bridge over Massaponax Creek to include an additional westbound travel lane and sidewalk. The lane closure provides a safety buffer between vehicle traffic and a steep dropoff in the work zone.
Access to all side street entrances and businesses will be maintained.
Details of the temporary traffic pattern include:
One of two left turn lanes on Route 1 northbound to Southpoint Parkway will close
Westbound Southpoint Parkway will be reduced to a single lane from Route 1 to the bridge over Massaponax Creek
Route 1 southbound traffic turning right onto westbound Southpoint Parkway will be required to yield to oncoming traffic on westbound Southpoint Parkway
East of Route 1, traffic departing the Southpoint II shopping center will have a modified lane configuration at Route 1. Departing traffic can use a left turn lane, a shared left turn and through lane, and a right turn lane.
Drivers with destinations outside the Southpoint Parkway area are encouraged to use any of the following alternate routes to avoid delays:
Spotsylvania Parkway
Leavells Road
Courthouse Road
Harrison Road
Hood Drive
Weather permitting, construction activities will take an estimated three weeks to complete.
Message boards will be posted this week to alert travelers to seek alternate routes.
